Manual Supplement

44 Pound Weight

Fits 1930’s Industrial Switcher Locomotive

Usage

The weight is used to make the locomotive heavier to prevent wheel slippage during operation. It is most often necessary when operating on club tracks which may be oily due to operation of other locomotives and where longer trains will be operated. The weight is removable for transportation.

Caution – The weight is heavy and can pinch your hand. Two persons are required for installation and removal.

Notice – The weight may not remain in place if the locomotive is turned on its side for service. Always remove or support the weight before turning the locomotive on its side.

Installation

The weight is supplied with four pieces of a special mounting material to hold it in place (packed with these instructions). As supplied these squares have an adhesive material on both outer sides that is covered by a clear plastic film until installation. This material is actually two layers that “mate” with each other but may be separated and reattached many times. Once installed, the weight may be removed by pulling these two layers apart.

The weight is marked with a temporary label as to its top surface. This label also indicates which axis of the weight goes from side to side (left to right). This label may be removed once you are sure how the weight is installed.

Remove the six hood side doors from the locomotive as explained in the manual.

Study the drawing to understand where the weight is to go. You only have one chance to position it properly because the adhesive will hold immediately. No te that the weight is basically centered between the hood door channels (approximately centered is fine) and that the front edge is even with the back edge of the hole through which the motor goes. If you position if farther forward you will not be able to use the full range of motor movement to adjust the belt.

Using the drawing and taking measurements of the weight, determine where it will set once it is installed. Locate the four pieces of mounting material. Remove the film on one side and place each piece in one corner of the area where the weight will go on the main deck. Leave the film on the other side. Press them securely in place.

Cut a piece of cardboard or 1/8” thick masonite (hard board) to cover the hood mounting tracks and to protect them from the weight. Remove the film on the other side of the mounting material to expose the adhesive. Place the cardboard or masonite across under the hood and carefully lift and slide the weight under the hood. Position it above its final location and slide the cardboard or masonite out allowing the weight to be lowered until the adhesive makes contact. You may use this same method to remove the weight.

Reassemble the locomotive.
